In my former gig as a music writer, I had the pleasure of participating in the media panel of the annual Homemade Music Symposium, a two-day event at Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City campus. The energizing and camaraderie-filled cluster of workshops reinforced that Tampa Bay has a thriving music scene and offered informative seminars, networking parties and concerts that built morale and assisted musicians, producers and DJs in networking and learning new promotional skills.

Creative Loafing continues in the community-building tradition with a new local music industry event that offers cutting-edge media expertise, hands-on experience and big names in the music industry worldwide. The Pre-Heat Music Workshops, held in conjunction with WMNF Tropical Heatwave, features David Lowery of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven fame and Tony Michaelides, who’s worked in the music industry for more than 30 years as a publicist for U2 , David Bowie, The Police, Peter Gabriel, New Order, The Pixies, Depeche Mode, Matchbox Twenty, Dave Matthews, Massive Attack, Stone Roses and others. He’s now an author, radio presenter, mentor and speaker. Meet Lowery, Michaelides and other musicians and experts Saturday, May 14, 2011.
